If you add it up, I've been looking for a 401 to build for the Rambler for almost three years. Today, I am going to give up and build another 360 only this time with a 401 crank and a solid roller cam for some fun revs. This seems like a more realistic build since the 360 is still the most common AMC engine in the yard by far. I will try to make it the ultimate build since it will be the last for a while. Anyone have any cool suggestions or trick combos they'd like to share?

1. I wish I'd known that you needed a 401. I came across one in a Matador in a self service yard down in Wilmington. Car even had a full gasket set sitting in the trunk.

That insane and expensive Hogans intake and nos setup should be cool.

2. There's got to be a 401 somewhere to score for a reasonable price.

Can't someone help this man out?!

Come over to the dark side Glad, yank the AMC motor and drop an LS7 in that Rambler!!! HA!

3. I pitched that to the readers and no one went for it. I'm thinking stroked 360 with Honda rods. I hear that is the latest ultimate combo.

4. When you do the buildup in the mag keep the word Honda out of it. Say custom rods instead. To some the only more sacrilege than sticking ricer parts in an american V8; is putting a sbc in a 71 Cuda.

6. Hey Glad, I'm sure you've already thought of this, but have you bugged the 4x4 guys yet about a 401? I seem to remember a lot of CJ-series Jeeps that had 401s; maybe somebody's got one squirreled away that they'd trade for a 360.

7. besides the obvious displacement, what advantage does the 401 have over the 360?

8. About the one good thing is a 401 can use the 727 trans, but a newer 360 will fit also and I mean later than a 71. Before that year you have to mill the crank to accept the 727 flange because we all know Borg-Warner trans are unrebuildable to a performance level you must achieve to carry the torch for AMC.

9. Back to your maybe surplus 360, do you know if a 65 Rambler Classic ever used the bigger V-8 instead of the 287? I just got a 2 Dr. Hardtop without engine or tranny and am trying to figure what might fit and parts available. If the 360 fits in my classic, would you be interested in selling it? If not, I was thinking that a SBC or Mopar 318 might work, but haven't a clue regarding the engine & tranny swaps. Anybody have suggestions?

10. I'm looking for a 1973 360 motor to put in my Javelin AMX but would take a 401. I must live in a part of missouri that does not an AMC of any kind in their junk yards. Need help, thanks!

12. I don't believe I'd consider a stock 360 block for an RPM based AMC motor. Have you compared the main webbing in a 360 to a 390-401 block?? It's a lightweight block and NOT suited to high RPM. I have often wondered why one of the aftermarket vendors hasn't made a suitable heavy duty AMC block available (and at an affordable price).
And PLEASE don't make the mistake I see made over and over with AMC motors,,USE A SOLID CAM!! AMC's have a heavy valve train and like to float (HYD) lifters around 56-5800 RPM. AMC's like more cam timing than other motors of the same size.
Why not get some head flow figures together and use one of the engine building software programs to build your engine on a computer first?

13. What is heavy about the AMC valvetrain exactly? And it's cylinder pressure that breaks blocks , not rpm. Our 360 revs to 6,200 and makes 695hp. Stock block, stock crank, hydraulic lifters.
