Remember the budget 302 we built in the November 2007 issue? It made something like 275 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque for about $2K. Well it was kinda cool for an economy engine that you could put in a F-150 or an early Mustang but it was kind of watch-winding boring to see in the dyno room. Soooo, were going to pep it up with a set of AFR heads that have been milled for a little compression. Any guesses on how much power it will make? No changes, just the heads. Ask me and I will post the flow digits.

16. I thought this was suppose to be a budget build?
Why not drop on a set of ported '66 289 heads fitted with SBC valves, and add a Edel. perf RPM cam and intake.

18. Remember your 5.0/405 HP project. You took an injeted motor put AFR Heads and Carbed it. How about a Fuel Injected 405? What would it take? I have a 90/5.0 motor out of a Crown Vic(police car). Different firing order etc. How much OE Mustang parts do I need?

20. I just looked at the article in the June '08 issue of Car Craft. They state they made a 92 horse power increase.

21. OK I am very interested in whats happening here. I have a stock 302 in my river jet, sounds to me like its got a marine cam in it. I like to do things right the first time every time. Building motors is new to me so I have much to learn. So now Im at roller rockers, heads, porting, stroker kit, and matching a cam to it. I currently get 4600 rpm and am looking for 5600 to 6000. comments please and I will let you know how it all works out.

22. Mr. Glad, I didn't know where to chime in on your Feb. 09 issue's article on the Weiand 174 blower on the 302, so I'm just posting here and hope to get some feedback. If you want to move this somewhere else, feel free.
I was pretty excited to see that article as I am planning a similar build for my 65 Comet Caliente except with a 408 stroked Windsor. As you probably found out, there are a lot of fitment issues with accesory drive parts that is the biggest headache . I was pretty dissappointed that not much was said about fitting that blower snout drive in these small engine compartments, especially with a bigger aftermarket radiator. From the pics, you guys don't even have a radiator in there and it doesn't look like theres any room for one. So what did you guys do there ? Just skip that part ? Fill us in, does even a stock radiator fit ?, does the radiator support need to be modified to move the radiator forward ?
By the time I got through the article, I thought it was a useless bit, showing a great simple blower set-up that's not going to fit these little engine compartments. Hey, show us the rest of the install to run this baby. In case someone has run across issues with that, I wanted to share what I've found to fit so far and it seams like the perfect answer. Of course I'm not done with the car yet and could have other fitment issues come up but I don't forsee that now.
My project is a 65 comet, I have a 351 block and junk 302 heads to use for mock up. I bought what was supposed to be a B&M 174 blower for the 302 off ebay. A Summit ford radiator, 27x19x2 1/4. The shock towers are cut out and an R&C Motorsports coilover front suspension welded in. I cut out the radiator support to fit, and channeled down into the frame 1 1/2" and as far forward as possible with a dual electric fan set up mounted inside as pullers . When I put the mocked up motor in, there was no way even a stock ford water pump would fit let alone your 174 ford blower snout and drive that sticks out in front of the water pump. I think I found the perfect solution. After calling Holley about parts for the blower, I find out I have a 140 something blower with a shorter 7 3/4" chevy drive snout on it, all set up for the 302. It also came with adapter plates and a valley plate to use on a 351. After searching around for the shortest water pump possible, I find out the entire front accessory drive system on the 94-95 mustang 302s is about 1 3/4 shorter than the standard. I got an entire acc. drive off a 95 mustang, bolted it up and WTH, everything lines up perfect. The blower pully is 10 rib, the mustang drive is 6 rib but they match and it gives you room to play with, maybe a shim or two, to line up the blower pulley right with the 95 mustang drive pulleys. 1 serpentine belt to run all of it and it clears my fans by 3/4 in. The only bracket I modified was the alt. and smog pump. The alt. sets to close to use standard valve covers and who needs a smog pump. So I put together an alt. bracket that keeps the tensioner pully and bolts in the same place and did away with the factory bracket and smog pump on the pass. side. All brackets bolt to the block, so can be used on the 302 or 351. What a stroke of luck, the blower coming with the shorter chevy snout. I don't imagine anyone would think to try the different length snouts for the different makes. I don't have my measurement notes with me but this is a great fit. I also don't know about the 174 since mine turned out to be a 142. I'm going to ask holley if a Weiand 174 main body can be swapped in to my existing parts and not move this blower snout farther out.
Forget that in front of the water pump set up that is never going to fit in our small engine bays. A 94-95 mustang acc. drive system makes a lot more room and the B&M blower set up with the shorter chevy snout line up close enough to it to incorperate it into the acc. drive system, maybe a shim or two to line up grooves. I wanted to pass this on cause it seams like a great find. I'd also like to hear from anyone else what they've done to get a similar set up to fit these little Ford engine bays.
By the way, I love Car Craft, right up my alley. When I get this thing put together, I'll be hitting a few of your runs. To date, I have the front suspension in, motor mocked up, cut out and welded in a trans tunnel for my TKO 600, finished mini tubs, sent back a TCI torque arm rear suspension that I would have had to rebuild 2/3 to fit my Comet, ordered up a Hotrodstohell truck arm rear suspension to finish up the back with my narrowed 9 in., 31 spline Moser axles, True trac dif with 3.7:1 Ford gears, 295/65/15 MT drag radials, extended wheel openings 2 1/2 " , fixed the firewall to take the hydroboost brake system off my 79 Versaille parts car, Power r&p, Aftermarket AC,plenty of sound deadener and insulation. I'm stripping the paint now and with the help of a good painter friend, intend to do body and paint myself. A set of Keith Craft 195 Brodix heads wait for my all forged short block. I'm way over my head but just keep at it. Look for me in a year. Keep up the good rag, just tell us all the issues you guys run up agaisnt while trying to fit all this stuff in. What a bummer to get the 174 Ford set up and find no way in hell it's gonna fit without a lot of hacking.
