Well I finally found a 401. I got it through a friend of Doug Galvin at Galvin’s Rambler Parts in Northern California. It’s just a block but it already has the oiling modification although the bores are pretty rough.

The guys and I thought it might be cool to do an entire engine build online so we can include everything that won’t fit in the magazine. Starting with this AMC engine, we are going to post the process step-by-step with all the decisions and math so you can give your input along the way. It will also give you an idea of exactly how long an engine build like this really takes.

3. hey Doug,I would dump the scorn 401 for the one I have NOS in the AMC shipping carton.Also have a reground crank and some venolia pistons floated on the rods-STD,,,I sent a letter about 2 yrs ago to the mag.showing some of my cars and offering a free 401 for your Rambler but got no responce,,,I have since sold all my parts sans a few,,,had at least 8 401s,30 cranks and dozens of sets of rods,,,,etc,etc,--Ralph-p.s. I grew up in Ma. and knew Curboys real well,I went to school in Dudley,,any chance that magnet kid has an older brother Richard? if so I know him.

4. Great idea to put the build on the www. I'm building a 401 myself so I'll be following along. I sure wish you'd post the original 370 build on the website...I've misplaced my CC mag from two years ago.

5. I got a hole stack of articles on AMX's and AMC's from over the years.
I hope you really go into detail ,because I will be building one in the near future.Haven't done one in 30 years and need all the learning I can get in . AMC stuff is a lot harder to find than Ford or Chevy parts. You have my undivided attention.

8. Doug,
thanks again for doing this on the web. if stock heads are going to be involved in this or any related AMC build, could you do some head porting? two things: there seems to be a lot of mystery over head porting AMC heads, and whenever i read about head porting the pictures are always shadowy and hard to figure out...maybe post some pictures, drawings and diagrams to show where material is being removed/added.
