E85 as performance fuel

In my previous blog, I outlined a street mileage motor based on much more static compression. There are variations on this idea. One of the best is a turbocharged version with a little less static compression. Let's play this out with a 302ci small-block Chevy with a slightly lower 10:1 static compression. The camshaft can still be rather short, which will make killer cylinder pressure in the midrange. And if the heads are matched properly, using E85 could make 600 hp with single-digit boost numbers. These are very conservative numbers. If you want to bump the boost, the power could climb well into the 750hp range. There was a Mustang that competed in our Street Machine of the Year event at St. Paul that made 817 RWHP on E85. Now we have an engine with amazing power that won't be quite as efficient on mileage because of the lower compression but would still be capable of 20 mpg on the highway with excellent throttle response and tire-shredding power. We built a 350 a year or so ago that ran a Magnuson supercharger at 10:1 static compression and made 630 hp with no detonation. Blowers and turbos love E85 because of its cooling effect. This would be an awesome street engine.
