Every car guy at one time or another has experienced what I call racer mode. It occurs usually a couple days (or maybe a couple hours) before a big event. Racer mode means that availability of parts and help from friends becomes of supreme importance, much more so than the price. If you have to order the parts, UPS Red Label becomes your best and worst friend. It's good because the parts have a chance to arrive on time, but it's your worst friend because the price for Red Label is often more than the parts themselves. Prior planning and attention to detail are two of the best ways to avoid going into racer mode, but even the best plans go awry and that's when you discover who your friends really are. I've been in racer mode several times and while it's exciting, it's an exercise in sleep deprivation and wallet abuse.
