What is Ford's EcoBoost?

Ford has begun to push something called EcoBoost in some four- and six-cylinder engines. The basic concept is an interesting combination of turbocharging and gasoline direct injection. While diesel engines have combined this technology for decades, it's a relatively new approach for gasoline engines. We've even heard of some experiments where E85 has been used in place of gasoline with excellent results that produce much better efficiency while allowing even greater power due to ethanol's superior octane rating. It will be years before this technology might trickle down to the enthusiast level, but imagine borrowing injector pump technology from the diesel guys to turn your small-block into a turbocharged and direct-injected street hero.
