The hot ticket right now on the outdoor car circuit like the Goodguys' events is autocrossing. A tight, 15- to 20-second course can be set up in a relatively small parking lot with a few dozen cones and an electric timer and you've got yourself a racetrack. Detroit Speed, Air Ride Technologies, Global West, Hotchkis, and many other suspension companies are hot on the trail of showing off how well their parts work to improve the handling on ’60s muscle cars. Car Craft is right on track with an autocross as part of our Street Machine of the Year contest (we were autocross testing as part of Real Street Eliminator back in 1985, but that's another story). This fits right in with the whole Pro Touring gig except that now your car really has to deliver on the visual promises. As a used-to-be-SCCA-Pro-Solo racer, I can tell you that it's even more fun than it looks. Some might scoff at the low speeds, but I can tell you that unless you can beat the fast boys (and girls), don't put it down. Going quick is not nearly as easy as it looks, but it's a lot of fun along the way. Look into doing a little cone-chasing for yourself. You just might discover it's a ton of fun.
