In my last blog, I mentioned swapping an LS series engine into a Gen III Camaro or Firebird. Continuing that idea, here’s one that should get the Ford guys all up in arms. The concept is simple—one of the least expensive and affordable cars on the road right now is a ’79 through perhaps ’94 Mustang body. Stuff an LS-series engine in it. Why? Because you can find an all-aluminum LS series engine for a righteous price that makes excellent power. To keep it simple, you convert the EFI to a carburetor and use the MSD ignition conversion box. Bolt an affordable TH350 trans behind it and combine that with the Fox body’s excellent 8.8 rearend and you have a durable and quick package. I’ve done a quick budget rundown, and you could build an 11.90s car with a 5.3L truck engine and a TH3350 for less than $8,000. That’s complete. The only thing I didn’t include would be tax and insurance. The one trick part in this whole exercise is the tubular engine crossmember that’s available from a company called AJE Racing. The rest of this is a slam dunk. Then, if you’ve got some coin to spare, Procharger is about to release a complete blow-through carbureted supercharger package and you’d have a low 11- or high-10-second car for around $11,000. That’s cheap in anybody’s book.
