A Procharger Blow-Through LS-Series Supercharger

Here’s How to Make Even More Power With an LS-Series Engine

If you’re a loyal CC reader, then you’ve probably seen the two stories in the last year or so that I’ve done using a Procharger P-1SC centrifugal supercharger on first a 302 small-block Ford (Dec. ’07) and most recently on a 355ci small-block Chevy (Feb. ’09). The Ford, equipped with a set of RHS heads and a Comp Cams hydraulic roller cam, made just a tick over 600 hp using a blow-through carburetor. The small-block Chevy made 611 hp before we got greedy and upped the boost too much and broke a few pistons. It was on its way to making 650 when it broke. My idea now is even more fun. Procharger just announced a mount system to bolt a P-1SC blower to the front of an LS-series engine as a blow-through carbureted package. Here’s the idea. We’re seeing all kinds of take-out 5.3L LS-series engines for $500. Add an Edelbrock carbureted intake, a Quick Fuel blow-through carburetor, the MSD ignition conversion box, a set of headers, and you’re ready to go. Bolt this into an early Chevelle, Camaro, or Fox-bodied Mustang (did we say that?) and you’ve got a 550hp stormer. We would put forged pistons in the engine just to be safe, but we’re looking at serious power from a boneyard engine. If you’re lucky, you might be able to find an all-aluminum 5.3L that is also out there if you look hard enough. Or, if you’re really bucks-down, find a 4.8L motor and add a 5.7L crank and rods adding forged pistons and you’ve got a budget 5.7L LS1-style engine for no money with a blower. Yahoo!
