A Budget Ford That Flies

We’re always looking for that next new car building idea when we ran across Griggs Racing’s website and the pile of suspension parts the company builds for ’83 to ’88 T-birds. Now the Thunderbird may not be real high up on your priority list, but let’s look at some specs. Most car crafters probably think of the Turbo Coupe first. The car is based off the Fox-body Mustang platform. That means there are tons of parts available for these cars at a reasonable price. Plus, for you top-speed guys, the stock drag numbers are around 0.32. Griggs Racing offers a slick tubular crossmember that will allow you to drop in a 5.0 or 351W motor while reducing weight and improving strength. Subframe connectors are mandatory, but you also have the strength of a stock 8.8 rearend, and many of the Turbo Coupe cars came with five speeds, so you have the stock pedal assembly to bolt in a stronger Tremec TK-600. With a ton of suspension pieces available, you could have a killer track car that’s also a sleeper. Did we forget to mention it only weighs around 3,300 pounds with a driver? With work, you could get that down to perhaps 3,100 pounds—that’s enough for low 12s with only 400 hp. Now you have a cheap 12-second street car that’s not just another Fox Mustang.
