There will be a story in the Nov. ’09 issue on how to pull weight out of your car. Chevelles typically weigh between 3,400 and 3,550 pounds, and I can tell you that I’ve got my Orange Peel Chevelle way below those figures. This is a tease to get you to read the story when it comes out, but the kick I’m on right now is to reduce weight and tune the suspension to improve the car’s e.t. and speed without touching the engine. Maybe you saw the story where we’ve already put in a 200-4R automatic overdrive. This trans uses a deeper 2.74:1 First gear ratio (compared with 2.48 for the TH400 or 2.52 for the TH350), and its also lighter than the TH400. Now I’ve got the rear suspension done with a cool kit from Global West that lowers the lower rear control arm to change the instant center. This will allow the car to plant the rear tire harder and generate body rise on acceleration. Next, I think a set of double-adjustable shocks like from QA1 would help tune the rear suspension. I have some ideas on that as well that I’ll save for the next blog. Stay tuned.
