In the past when I’ve tried to improve the front suspension at the dragstrip, I’ve always removed the front sway bar in an attempt to get the front end to rise more quickly. With my current package—the 383 and California Performance Transmissions 200-4R trans and 3.55 rear gear—the car launches pretty hard and pulls the right front much higher than the left. I’m thinking about slowing down the front end rise just enough so that it doesn’t bang up against the bumpstops as hard as it does now. Another item we may try is an A-body-specific rear sway bar package that Dick Miller Racing now sells that was originally designed to help manage all the torque that those big-block Oldsmobiles make. We will probably try one of these sway bars (PN 7413, $318.00 from dickmillerracing.com). Brian Rock, a friend of the magazine, has one of these systems on his 10-second ’65 GTO that he really likes. It counteracts twisting the front suspension, which is typical of the stock suspension.
