Over the course of this blog, I’ll be dropping in little bits of information that I’ve learned about the LS-series engine as I put my motor together. One of the first things I came across is that my Scat crank needed a new woodruff key to locate the crankshaft cam gear as well as drive the oil pump sleeve that fits over the crank snout. I quickly discovered that the only place I could find one of these was at the GM dealership. It’s a very specific keyway with little ears on the end of the keyway. The GM PN is 12561513 and list price is $4.46, but you probably have a guy at the local GM dealership that can cut you a deal. As far as I know, no aftermarket company yet makes this little rascal. I expect Pioneer will soon, but as of this writing I don’t know about it. If you’re building a stroker engine or any LS engine with an aftermarket crank, you’ll need one of these. This is especially critical if the engine is driving a supercharger off the crank snout.
