Pro Touring Shootouts

Most of the Pro Touring type competition events that are becoming increasingly popular use the classic combination of a road course, autocross, and some kind of braking event competition where the quickest time wins. I've been watching and participating in these events now for several years and one key to almost all these events is how well the driver is tuned into his car. Among these events, there are always people who are better at one particular event than the others. It also appears that very few drivers are particularly good at the braking events. I guess that's always kind of been the case that car crafters will spend much more time and effort working on going fast than they will on trying to stop. But if you think about it, having good brakes and knowing how to use them is a pretty important deal. When I was the editor of Chevy High Performance magazine, we did a 0-100-0 test every year for close to six years and most of the time I did most of the driving and learned quite a bit from the guys at Baer who helped with the instrumentation of those tests. This may not sound very important, but if you think of the 0-100-0 as drag race in both acceleration and deceleration, then perhaps it will take on more importance. If you were going to compete in some kind of event like this - which is what our Real Street Eliminator Launch Box event is all about, then the key would be to sweat the details. Over the next few blogs, I'll talk about some things I've learned that can improve braking times and distances.
